We write stories about them, and we sing about them. Hannah was a woman in need of a hero. Her story is found in 1 Samuel. As a woman without a son, she was in a dangerous position in her culture. If her husband, Elkanah, died, she would have no one to care for her. Hannah was most likely the first wife of Elkanah, but the Lord closed her womb, and so Elkanah set about finding a child-bearing wife. This puts Peninnah in an awful spot.

Find a place and let’s go. For the restaurant was not so much a restaurant but a dog-rescue like non-profit where the last vestiges of hipsters, millennials, and people confused about their sexual identity were hired and provided a nice little preserve to live in ironically It was bad enough I could not look at our server, who although nice and very good at her job, was so pierced, tattooed and poorly dressed, it ruined the dining experience.
And got the hell out of there.

The Rovers Return continues to defy physics. The Rovers Return, famously, cannot exist. The living room should be halfway into Rosamund Street, the toilets are in Ken Barlow’s living room, and there seem to be about fourteen bedrooms upstairs even before Peter finishes his loft conversion. This week we got yet another twist on its Escher-like architecture: Perhaps it enters another dimension, where you reach that secret flat Steve and Michelle lived in for about six months in ?
My apologies to Georgia Taylor, incidentally, for picking a screengrab where it looks like she’s auditioning to play the Joker. I just needed a picture of the wall. Todd is on the run The mess of trying to accommodate Todd’s sudden departure rumbles on, as he apparently punched a policeman and legged it into some woods, leaving Summer to just wander off. I can’t even remember why he vanished in the first place, but I am enjoying the convoluted nonsense the writers are having to spin to try and explain why he doesn’t just come home.
It hasn’t quite reached the utter insanity of when they had to cover for Sharif’s disappearance remember that? When they filled the gap in the plotlines by having Maria accused of murdering her lesbian stalker, except she was hiding in her stair cupboard, or something? Perhaps Todd got abducted by elves in that wood, or he’s secretly an alien.
After serving in the church for roughly 10 years, Carter was able to talk about the pastor’s good and bad qualities and dissect where he felt it went wrong. Carter started his blog off by saying Driscoll stepping down was “good news,” but wanted to clarify why before everyone jumped on him for it. He said from through he attended the church and was in numerous roles including “worship leader, deacon, redemption group leader, small group host and leader, have done Biblical counseling, and even been a volunteer sound guy.
Facebook: Mark Driscoll Emery guitarist and Bad Christian Podcast co-host Matt Carter weighed in on the news of Mars Hill Church Pastor Mark Driscoll’s resignation. After serving in the church for roughly 10 years, Carter was able to talk about the pastor’s good and bad .
Driscoll was baptized and raised Catholic, serving as an altar boy for a few years while attending Catholic school. In his teen years, he stopped going to church and had little to no interest in spiritual things. At age nineteen, while in college, Driscoll had a life-changing experience reading the book of Romans in the Bible and he became a Christian.
Shortly thereafter, God spoke audibly to him while at a men’s retreat for a church, telling him to marry Grace his girlfriend since age seventeen , preach the Bible, train men, and plant churches. And that’s precisely what he’s been doing ever since. In , at the age of twenty-five, Pastor Mark and his wife, Grace, started a small Bible study in their home in Seattle, which at the time was one of America’s least-churched cities.
Since that time, the church has exploded, with upwards of thirteen thousand people meeting on Sundays across ten locations with two dozen total services in two states Washington and New Mexico. Mars Hill has been recognized as the sixty-fifth largest, fortieth fastest-growing, and second most innovative church in America by Outreach magazine. Young, single men comprise the largest demographic of Mars Hill Church attendees, which is un- usual since this is statistically the least likely group to attend church.
They come for steady blows of blunt-force Bible truth to the head found in the hour-long sermons that work through books of the Bible. Many of those men, along with women, are becoming Christians; over eight hundred people were baptized at Mars Hill campuses last year alone.

Mark Driscoll resigned as leader pastor of Mars Hill Church, Seattle, on 14 October , despite the fact that the elders investigating his conduct do not believe him to be disqualified from pastoral ministry. While Mark Driscoll has rightfully been accused of shameful behaviour, the corrupt fruit of his ministry identifies him as a false teacher.
In August the board of Acts29, the church planting network founded by Mark Driscoll, expelled him, and his Mars Hill Church, from membership on grounds of his ungodly and disqualifying behaviour.
Many people from this ministry and people in and around Vancouver travel down to Mars Hill, watched it, listened, downloaded many of Mark Driscoll’s podcasts. I know you’ve commented on your relationship with Mark on your own podcast.
At the risk of being even more widely despised than I currently am, I will lean over the plate and take one for the team on this. It is not uncommon to meet pastors’ wives who really let themselves go; they sometimes feel that because their husband is a pastor, he is therefore trapped into fidelity [emphasis added], which gives them cause for laziness. A wife who lets herself go and is not sexually available to her husband in the ways that the Song of Songs is so frank about is not responsible for her husband’s sin, but she may not be helping him either.
A series of Driscoll’s more memorable anecdotes and axioms on women, marriage and particularly about sex can be read over here. All that is to say that Grace Driscoll is free to believe what she likes about her husband having no history of having said or done anything she would consider misogynistic. The rest of the world is free to suggest a different possibility.
There really is a lot that could be unpacked from what Smidt shared but one of a few things that her conversation reminded me of was something I considered a couple of years ago about the nature of shunning at Mars Hill. This was probably most true about men and wives were only secondarily considered. The scant advantage that might have had for women was that wrath from above would tend to be mediated to the husband first on account of headship retroactive sarcasm alert.
The disadvantage would be that since women were expected to be under headship any concerns they had would be required to go up the chain of command. So a wife who had concerns about a leadership decision or a policy would have to mediate that concern through a husband who might or might not get heard or who might or might not accurately or adequately convey his wife’s concerns.
But there’s another thing that’s come to mind lately hearing Smidt’s story.

Rantings and tirades of a frustrated economist. If something shows up twice, ehh Three times may be a short term trend. And something is terribly amiss with The United Way.
In , Pastor Mark Driscoll resigned from Mars Hill Church in Seattle after a series of simply awful behavior. It was so bad that his church was dropped from the Acts 29 church planting network he started due to “ ungodly and disqualifying behavior.”.
I admit it is an hour long video, or audio track, but well worth the time to listen to! I guess the things that stuck out for me were: What are your thoughts guys? I don’t have the time to sit and watch some long video like that. I’ll respond to your main points that you personally got out of it tho. Dating is not engagement or even serious. The start of dating is loose and fluid so getting yourself to a point of ‘ready’ just makes no logical sense because you’ll be finding that point your entire life if that is your goal – Involing girls Dad in getting married to his daughter Click to expand I agree for the sake of saving face only and proving myself to the father.
Not in some type of ‘old-fashioned’ thinking because if the father still says no, I won’t care. I’ll fight for the relationship. Belief and disbelief means nothing to me. I would say that it probably does work better for people of the same theological views, but since I’m a non-believer, I really can’t answer that because theology means nothing to me and to me, there is more to a person’s identity than their faith or their disbelief.

Posted on June 22, Leave a comment If you are selling something, whether a product or service, you hope for repeat business. For customers to come time and time again and repurchase … but what makes a brand sticky? What brings a customer back? An article I wrote recently, Sex Attention — looks at how the music industry sells itself and its artists. So much effort is put into the casing, the shell, packaging, the box … so much emphasis on the outer wrapping but does this create brand stickiness?
Or, a little bit like bacteria becoming immune to antibiotics, are we becoming immune to the traditional methods of advertising?
